Annual plan
An annual plan governs and athlete or a team’s training and activities for the year. To have an effect annual plan periodization has to be incorporated. According to Tudor Bompa, who is considered as the leading expert in this field, periodization is the process of dividing an annual plan into smaller phases of training. This enables the coach to work with manageable segments of an annual plan (Bompa, 1987). An example of an annual plan is shown on the right. In each phase of the annual plan different types of training and different intensities are applied. There are three main phases of the annual plan, preparatory, Competitive and Transition. These phases are then broken down into sub phases. These sub phases are preparation, specific preparation, pre competitive, competition and transition. These phases are further broken down into macro and micro cycles (Lawrence R woodman, 1983).
